4 Years Ago in Athens

It seems hard to believe that it's been four years, but the Olympics only come every four years, so I remember this Saturday (four years ago). I was to attend a wedding of some OCC students at Fir Road Christian Church in Carl Junction, which is easily 20-25 minute drive from our house.

I refused to leave home at the time required to arrive at the wedding on time. Why? Because the Summer Olympic Games from Athens was on TV, and Chile was playing in the Men's Doubles Match for the Gold Medal. Chile had never ever won an Olympic gold medal before, and here they were, playing for the gold. I was riveted. I knew that I needed to leave for Fir Road, but I couldn't. Now, four years later, I would just let the DVR handle it, and I would watch it when I got home. But no, I had to stay!

The fact that the groom was Mexican, and I doubted that the wedding really would start on time was a mitigating factor. We did not leave home unti l Chile had won the gold, and we arrived at the church before the wedding started, so all was well in the world. Actually, in Athens, Chile won 2 gold medals, as Nicolás Massú, one of the members of the Chilean doubles team, also won a gold medal in Men's Singles.

Why is this significant? Because now, 4 years later, Massúʼs doubles partner from Athens, Fernando González, is getting ready to play for the Men's Singles gold medal. For those who might be interested, it should be on around 3 AM tomorrow morning. The tennis events are on the USA Network, not the normal NBC channels. At that hour, I will neither be late for a wedding, nor will I be awake. I do have the DVR set to record the Olympics happenings, after which time I can watch to see if González can repeat. He will be playing against Spain's Rafael Nadal. In the semi-final, González eliminated James Blake (USA). There was a missed call that went in González' favor. Blake complained that he should have 'fessed up, and surrendered the point. He didn't, went on to win the match, and is playing for gold. Chi Chi Chi Le Le Le. ¡Viva Chile!

Kimberly's Farewell Dinner--Tulsa, August 2

We went to Tulsa on Saturday, August 2, to see Kimberly off to Mexico. Rose, I and Kim went earlier, and checked into the motel that Steve & Charissa booked. We went to P. F. Chang's at Utica Square in Tulsa. The food was delicious, as was the company. Kim's been in Mexico for a week now. I just got an e-mail with photos from that evening. Here is one that the waiter at P. F. Chang's took:

2 Daughters--Each a Blessing

Today is an historic date: 8-8-08. How often do you see something like that? This morning I will perform a simple wedding ceremony, for one of Rose's co-workers. This evening I will attend a wedding of the daughter of one of my co-workers. Ten years ago (on 8-8-98, which is also a pretty cool combination of numbers), our older daughter got married. That means today is her 10th wedding anniversary. I can still bring back waves of emotion when I hear the Butterly Kisses song. Happy Anniversary, Steve & Charissa!

My second daughter, Kim, is in Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Μéxico. Αfter a very long trip, partially by air, and partially by land (from El Paso, TX to Parral), she has spent this week in what will be her home for the next year. Her emotions have pretty much been all over the board, ranging from What have I gotten myself into? to I think I can do this! (Photo of the girls taken with my cell phone camera at P. F. Chang's in Tulsa, on August 2)

Modern communications are a wonderful thing. It is so much easier to stay in communication today than when Rose and I (at a younger age than what Kim now is) went overseas for the first time [wise older readers are allowed to insert their favorite "back in my day story"]. E-mail did not exist back then. Air mail communication sometimes took two weeks to arrive. Cell phones may have existed, but were basically confined to Maxwell Smart's shoes. Today there are lots of options.

Skype is a wonderful thing. Last night we had a video phone call (via Skype, computer to computer) with Kim in Mexico. We talked to her, and saw her, sitting in front of her computer, for over an hour! That was pretty cool. Earlier in the evening, she had talked in the same way with her sister for about 50 minutes. During our conversation, I was also chatting (text) with her sister. Total cost for the conversation? How about FREE? Kim actually bought some Skype credit, and initiated the phone call, from her computer to our telephone (at a rate of about 2 cents/minute). We hung up, telling her that I would launch Skype so that we could talk computer-to-computer, but our DSL service hiccuped at that time, and we had to restart the modem a couple times before DSL service was re-established.

Kim has a pre-paid Mexican cell phone, but it is quite a bit more expensive to call Mexican cell phones, than Mexican land lines. It is easy to find long distance service to a Mexican land line for about 2 cents/minute, but calls to a Mexican cell phone average over 33 cents/minute. I found one service that is about 11 cents/minute, but FREE is a great price.

Charissa, enjoy your 10th anniversary! Kim, hang in there, and do your very best. I love you both!

Kim's in Mexico--It is Hot Here!

I just got an e-mail from Kim in Mexico. She left from Tulsa, OK for Mexico yesterday, and in now in Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico. Yesterday was the longest day of her life, and she has had a pretty good dose of culture shock already. She shed quite a few tears before leaving, and she has shed a few in Mexico. I believe that God remembers all our tears, according to Psalms 56:8, which is a good thing.

It is hot here. We have an atomi
c clock with an indoor/outdoor thermometer. The reading from this picture was when the outside unit was completely in the shade!

Kim Goes to Mexico

Within an hour we'll leave Joplin with our baby (she is an adult, and when her mother was the same age as she currently is, she lived in Chile, South America, and already had a child!), who is going to teach school in Mexico for the next year.

We'll drive down to Tulsa, where she will spend the night with her older sister and brother-in-law (alias, best friend). We will return to Joplin later tonight because of church commitments on Sunday. Friends from the Mexican school will meet her in El Paso, and take her to Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico. We will visit her in Septmember. The name of the school where she will be teaching is Instituto Las Américas de Parral.

Here is a Google Earth satellite image of the city where she will be (420 miles south of El Paso, TX):

Go, Cubs, Go!!! (WGN music video)

Last week the Milwaukee Brewers hop-scotched over the St. Louis Cardinals by sweeping them in St. Louis. They were breathing down the Cubs' neck, actually tying them for first place in the NL Central one week ago today. I was scared. The Cubbies won on Sunday while the Brewers lost, making the Brewers' stay in a tie for first place short-lived. The Cubs opened up a 4-game series in Milwaukee on Monday, and I was scared! The years of Cubbie events flashed before my psyche. "Maybe this is not a magical season afterall," I wavered in my faith.

The Cubs swept the Brewers in Milwaukee, putting a 5 game lead on the board (currently it is 4 games, but the Cubbies are already winning today). After every home win, Steve Goodman's song, "Go, Cubs, Go" is played over the PA system. In Milwaukee, enough Cub fans broke into the song after the Cubs won there, that it was detectable over the radio/TV broadcasts.

WGN radio produced a music video, with some of their radio personnel (and fans outside of Wrigley Field) featured. Here it is:

I'm still alive. I just haven't been blogging!

I'm certain that my vast readership (the number has probably shrunk from 4 readers to 2) has been wondering what I've been doing, since I haven't blogged in such a looooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg time. I'm still here. I've just been busy.

I've been:
  1. Working on my dissertation project
  2. Visiting with my son's family (last couple weeks of June)
  3. Getting ready for Kim to go to Mexico for a year
  4. Watching the Cubs get past the June Swoon, but suffering through one in July
  5. Translating for hispanic DWI offenders
  6. Doing some reading

On that last front, I've discovered a pretty good writer in the Christian fiction genre. I actually bought some of these books for Rose, basically because they were at reduced prices at our local Christian bookstore at the mall. She usually reads much more Christian fiction than I, but prefers Karen Kingsbury, Beverly Lewis, and similar writers. Eric Wilson does not fit that mold. I would describe him as a mix between Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker. I was probably persuaded to buy the discounted tome because Dekker gave an endorsement (much like I first found Dekker because of a Peretti endorsement.) By the way, Eric Wilson is the novelizer of the Sherwood Baptist Church screenplays, like Flywheel, Facing the Giants, and the upcoming Fireproof.

Another interesting book I've been reading is Jason L. Riley's Let The In: The Case for Open Borders--Six Common Arguments Against Immigration and Why They are Wrong. Riley is African American, conservative both economically an politically (he is on the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal), but differs drastically from the ultra-right wing radio and television populists, such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and others on the immigration issue. Much of my real life is intertwined with hispanics, both documented and un-documented. What I have read so far makes sense to me.

Several years ago, when my good friend Doug Marks joined our faculty, I remember him commenting that today's students are not readers, but rather skimmers. That resonated with me at the time, because I remember asking students if they had read assigned portions of the textbook, and receiving the strange response, "That depends on what you mean by the word read." It's only gotten worse since then.

I've already admitted to you in this blog entry, that I read books. I also read online. There are a number of blogs that I check semi-frequently. One of them is by Douglas Groothuis, a professor at Denver Seminary. I just happened onto it this morning. He has a post that references an interesting article in today's New York Times: Literacy Debate: Online, R U Really Reading?

An article by Nicholas Carr in the current issue of The Atlantic is titled Is Google Making Us Stupid? addresses the same issue. And finally, I just picked up a book that I had requested from the local public library many weeks ago. I got an e-mail message from the library this week, and went by to pick it up. If I don't have time to read it, at least I'll skim through it (I have my moments when I can be very funny!). It is Mark Bauerlein's The Dumbest Generation: How the Digital Ages Stupefies Young Americans and Jeopardizes Our Future.

That's all for right now. It's time to wake Rose up. I spent a couple hours studying Romans 10, checked out the Groothuis blog, which prompted me to write these lines. Now it will be off to worship at College Heights, Sunday dinner with Kimberly at home (her last Sunday in the U.S.), and later on to hope that the Cubbies can begin to turn it around.

Peace to all!

The Power of a Good Video (Long or Short)

Have you run across the Redbox DVD rental stations? For $1.08 you can rent a just-released movie. That certainly beats the $3.99 at Blockbuster! Problem is that it is for one night, so you've got to make certain you can watch it that night.

We picked up a movie last night and watched it. It was a wonderful story called Bella, that won all kinds of film festival rewards. Because of lack of funding, it had a much-delayed theater release. It is a wonderful story of forgiveness and redemption, and portrays Latinos in a very positive role.
Bella is the long video (1.5 hours) referred to in the title of this post. The short one is a music video I saw on my son Greg's blog site. He posted it shortly after his 8th wedding anniversary. I liked it so much I wanted to post it shortly before my 33rd wedding anniversary. It was done by Warren Barfield, and will be featured in an upcoming movie called Fireproof, from the Sherwood Baptist Church, the same people who produced the movie Flywheel and Facing the Giants. Here is Warren Barfield, in Love is Not a Fight:

Nathan Fish's Song

My son, Greg, is a songwriter. His oldest, Nathan, who will be six years old on June 12, improvised this song. There is a whole whopping 14:20 of Nathan and Eli singing on Greg's YouTube page. I excerpted about 1 minute of that long video, to let you see Nathan's creation.

It was a total improvisation, and starts out saying that Jesus Cares for us Everyday, but soon reminds me of Santa Claus. See if you don't almost hear a transition to "You Better Watch Out!", before transitioning back to a Christian song:

Sabbatical Begins

Grades Submitted on Time.

Yesterday our grades were due at 9:00 AM. I turned mine in at 8:54 AM. Yoohoo! I spent the remaining portion of the day getting ready to move stuff from my office to home, where I will spend most of my time working.

Workspace Set up at Home.

My workspace will be located downstairs in our family room. I moved an 8 foot table in there this morning, and will be taking books, articles, files, etc. home to work on the dissertation. Yoohoo!

Cubs tied for Best Record in Major League Baseball!

Previously, they were tied for that honor with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but now . . . it's with the Tampa Bay Rays! Were they perennial losers before just because of the word Devil in their name?

To Rick Brannan on Aposiopesis

I read Ricoblog with some regularity. Rick Brannan is a software engineer with Logos Bible Software, and blogs regularly about Greek. He is passionate about the Pastoral Epistles and Patristics. In his entry from yesterday, he called aposiopesis the word of the day. Rico just discovered the term in a commentary by R. T. France. I remember when I first discovered the term, so I wrote a piece about it. I think I'll leave a comment on Rick's blog pointing to this comment.

Rick,

I have enjoyed following your blogs for a long time now. I first became acquainted with the term aposiopesis back in 1973, when I was taking a course on the book of Hebrews. The course was based on the English Bible, but I was a second year Greek student, so I ran into this phrase:

ὡς ὤμοσα ἐν τῇ ὀργῇ μου·εἰ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς τὴν κατάπαυσίν μου
in Hebrews 3:11; 4:3; 4:5 (apodosis only).

I was puzzled by the English translation:

“As I swore in My wrath,
They shall not enter My rest,” (NASB)

I may not have known very much Greek, but that didn't square with what I knew the Greek said. I searched for the answer, and found aposiopesis. I have been searching to figure out just where I found the term. In my search this morning, I have found A. T. Robertson's Word Pictures, where in his entry on Mark 8:12 mentions the usage of ει instead of ου being a case of aposiopesis, imitating the Hebrew use of im. Robertson calls Mark 8:12 (ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, εἰ δοθήσεται τῇ γενεᾷ ταύτῃ σημεῖον) the only instance of aposiopesis in the NT, except for quotations from the LXX (citing the above-mentioned references from Hebrews). Interestingly, he does not mention aposiopesis in his comments in Hebrews.

BDF §372(2a) references this usage of ει with the indicative of reality as the manner in which the Hebrew particle אִם was translated.

Something curious happened about three years later. My younger sister was enrolled in the same Hebrews course. She had also studied Greek, and noticed the "if they shall enter into my rest" in the passages. As I mentioned, the course was based on the English Bible. Her instructor was really not all that proficient in Greek. My sister asked him the question, "Why does the Greek say 'if they shall enter' when the English says 'they shall not enter'?" He responded, you'll have to ask the Greek teacher that. Instead of asking the Greek teacher, she asked me. I glibly responded, "That's just a case of aposiopesis."

Now, more than 30 years later, I am teaching Greek at the same institution. Aposiopesis has been one of my favorite, lesser known figures of speech found in the Bible.

Thanks for your good work at Logos, and for helping many of us use technology to further our study of the NT text.

Blessings,

David

Jim Edmonds is a Cub

Jim Edmonds has been a very good baseball player in the past. After last night's game, the Cubs announced his signing, and optioned Felix Pie to the AAA Iowa Cubs, to make room on the Cubs roster. Check the story here from the official Cubs page.

I have mixed feelings about this. I have hated Jim Edmonds for years (in the Christian charity-sense of hating the guys on the opposing teams)!!!! Often, when commenting about how much I hated him (to fans of the St. Louis Cardinals), I admitted his quality, and even that "if he was one of our guys I would probably love him."

Still, he's 37 years old (for those of my generation that is old when it comes to playing baseball). He is in decline. Still, he is rumored to have signed for the prorrated MLB minimum. He may be in the lineup today, as the Cubs battle the San Diego Padres (the team that recently released Edmonds). Ironically, 2-times former Cub Greg Maddux will pitch for the Padres, which would normally mean that left-handed batting Edmonds would be in the lineup. He was released by the Padres because he was not hitting well. I hope he comes out of his slump quickly. Jim Edmonds' career stats available here.

The Praise (and Prayer) of a Child

My daughter facebooked me, and embedded something on my Fun Wall. It reminds me of Psalm 8:2 and Matthew 21:16, though it is taken from the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13. I liked it, so will share it here for you. Enjoy!

Test

This posting tests out a new function designed by the Logos Bible Software company called RefTagger. It is described here. What it is to do is to insert a link for anything that it recognizes as a Bible reference, like Romans 8:28. When you click on the Bible Reference, and window with the contents of that text should pop up.

I think it works just fine!

Back from St. Louis

It's always nice to see the Cubs win. I made the trip yesterday with my son-in-law, Steve Robinett. I had assumed that he was a Cardinals fan, but he is not, so we got along really well. Nobody in our section was drinking excessively--in fact, most people in our section were not drinking at all :), which made it nice. The Cubs scored six runs in the 4th inning and won the game 9-3. Ted Lilly pitched a quality start, going 7 innings and even hitting a double.

My friends, Jerry and Linda Mitchell, from the Joliet area were there with some of their friends. I had told them where we were going to be sitting. We had been phone-tagging some, but really hadn't talked (It's easy to miss a cell phone call in a stadium when it's noisy). When we descended from our section, there they were! It was good to see them (my digital camera is still in my car--I'll try to post a photo later.) When I was walking to the parking garage (we only had to pay $5 for parking), I listened to a voice mail from Jerry Mitchell, telling me that they would try to see me as I descended from my section. Thanks for finding me!

I have a new phone, the Samsung Blackjack II. It is a smartphone, combining my PDA and cell phone into one device, which even has a smaller footprint, which is nice. One of the things the phone has is built-in GPS. I got the GPS going with Google Maps, and was messing around with it before the ballgame started. I had the GPS on my phone locate me. I'll post a couple pictures, taken directly from screenshots on my phone. One shows my location on a map. The other one shows my location on a satellite image. When I zoomed in, in pinpointed my location in Busch Stadium. We were sitting in the nosebleed section, but the seat was great. I'll post a 3rd picture, taken with the cell phone camera during batting practice, showing our view of the playing field. Pretty cool!

Off to St. Louis to see the Cubs

Wow! I was really hoping to go see a different team that is is 1st place. I will be seeing a 1st place team, but it's the Cardinals that are in 1st, not the Cubs. The Cubbies have had 2 very disappointing losses in a row:
  1. Kerry Wood's blown save on Thursday against the Brewers (that put the Cardinals 1/2 game ahead of the Cubs
  2. Last night's loss (5-3) at St. Louis in 11 innings.

What disappointed me most in the loss last night was NOT the walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th. Soriano did some things to drive me crazy:

  1. His gross misplay of two very catchable fly balls in the 7th inning
  2. His free-swinging approach at the plate, flailing away at nearly anything that comes within five feet of the strike zone

His 2-run homer in the 9th atoned for the above sins, but he really hurt us!

Today we have Ted Lilly pitching against Kyle Lohse. I hope it is last year's version of Ted Lilly, instead of what we have seen so far this season. I'll post some photos from the game (hopefully a scoreboard shot showing the Cubs won) after I get back home.

Because I have a friend named Charlie who lives in Tennessee, I need to be careful about scoreboard photo shots. :)

ESPN's Sports Center is Very Helpful

If you follow a particular sports team, watching ESPN's Sports Center can provide some interesting information about your team. The Cubs-Brewers game was on ESPN last night, and the Cubs won 19-5, to keep them in a tie for 1st place with the surging St. Louis Cardinals (the Cubs are ahead of the Cardinals by percentage points.)

Sports Center informed me of three interesting facts:
  1. that the Cubs set a franchise record of 17 wins in April
  2. that the Cubs are 14-1 this season when scoring 4 runs or more in a game (the one game that they lost was Tuesday night against the Brewers when they lost 10-7)
  3. that the Cubs are 1-0 this season when scoring 19 runs or more in a game.

Thank you, Sports Center! Actually, the Cubs are 15-1 this season when scoring 4 runs or more in a game: wins by scoring 4 runs or more on April 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 30; only loss of the season when scoring 4 runs or more on April 29.

Eamus Catuli!
